Side By Side Subject and Painting - Trompe L'Oeil Five Dollar Bill

Since people seem to be curious, I thought I'd post a picture of a side by side comparison of one of my trompe l'oeil still lifes I finished this week - a folded five dollar bill taped to a board. So here is the original object and the painting on my easel. Obviously the one on the right is the painting (if nothing else, you can see my signature!). I try to get these small pieces done in about 8 hours, but not in a single sitting, since it's difficult to do lettering when the paint is wet underneath.

New Scrabble Commission

Maine Author Scrabble Commission, 5" x 7"/SOLD

I haven't had much time to paint the last couple of months, as my husband and I moved from Florida to New York, but I'll be back on a regular painting schedule now! Here's a recent commission, another Scrabble piece, but I really enjoy these, so keep 'em coming!

Wonder Bread 6x6 Daily Acrylic Painting

Acrylic on gessobord, 6" x 6"/SOLD

This is my first acrylic piece in quite a while, but I think it was successful. I was able to glaze much more quickly and effectively than I used to, probably because of working so much with the oils, and loved how I could keep my colors bright and even - perfect for the graphic look of the packaging. Plus, the drying time can't be beat! Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Small Fast Food Fries Daily Oil Painting

Oil on panel, 5" x 7"/ STILL DRYING

I hadn't actually intended to do a French fries painting right after the ketchup; they are even on different surface types - linen for the ketchup, board for the fries. Still, a thematic coincidence is always nice!

On the Easel - Almost Out of Heinz Ketchup Daily Oil Painting

Oil on linen mounted on board, 10" x 8"/ Just finished - Still drying

I drive my husband crazy because I always insist there's plenty of ketchup left in the bottle - like this one. I still see three or four servings. Hey, we live in a budget conscious economy!

I used the Scrabble game my grandmother gave me years ago as a model for the piece. She and I always made time to play Scrabble together when I lived in Pennsylvania. I hope this piece brings back good memories of playing the game with the people you love, too! Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Vintage Coffee Grinder Daily Oil Painting

Oil on linen mounted on panel, 10" x 8" - Still drying

I really am a collector of vintage objects, I suppose. I believe I inherited this piece from my aunt. It is one of those objects where I truly admire the attention to the design that the maker put in. Note the details on the top of the grinder, which have a permanent yellowed tone settled in around the edges. That was one of the aspects that made this piece fun to paint. I also like lighting the pieces dramatically in order to get both the extreme highlights (as on the wooden handle tip and drawer knob), and the extreme darks on the left shaded sides. I don't actually know much about what era this piece is from, but now I want to look it up!

On the Easel - Vintage Camera 3

Oil on linen mounted on panel, 6" x 6" - Still drying

This is the third camera from the vintage cameras I inherited from my grandfather. I really loved working on this camera even more than the others because the front art deco panel is pretty scratched up and the edges of the camera fairly worn. I wasn't sure how I was going to convincingly paint these aspects of the camera until I got up to that point, but I've been very surprised to learn how much I like painting worn, vintage objects.

Grandma's Vintage Flour Sifter Daily Oil Painting

Oil on linen mounted on panel, 6" x 6"/SOLD on Etsy.

I painted this using my Grandma's old metal flour sifter as a model. I loved the dents and rust, and although I'll probably never use the sifter in my cooking, I'll always keep it.

On the Easel Today - Grandpap's Vintage Camera 2 Daily Oil Painting

Just finished today - Vintage Camera 2 (Brownie Target six-20), oil on linen mounted on board, 8" x 10".

I painted this using another of my grandfather's vintage cameras as a model. From what I understand, this box camera was manufactured between 1941 and 1946. It's a bit worn on the edges, which I think gives it character that made it great for painting. I also have to say that I find older cameras to be works of art in and of themselves, with the detailed gold design on the face of the camera. It may not be worth much on the market, but I like owning little bits of history like this, especially when I think about how many photos of my family were taken years ago with it. Enjoy!

Another Dollar Bill Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting - Commission

5" x 5", oil on panel/SOLD

I recently painted a trompe l'oeil piece of a folded dollar bill taped to a board and auctioned it on eBay. One of the bidders who didn't win contacted me afterward and asked if I would do another. So nice of her to do so! Plus, I think it was a bit more fun to do this second time around. :)

Grandpap's Vintage Camera 1 Daily Oil Painting

6" x 6", oil on linen mounted on panel/SOLD on Etsy

I painted this using one of my Grandfather's vintage cameras as a model. I inherited three of his cameras when he passed away a few years ago. He was a Pennsylvania coal miner and the only member of my family with any artistic ability - drawing. He loved his wife and daughters, and it makes me smile to think about how many of the boxes of old photos we have were taken with this camera.
