On the Easel - Winnie the Pooh and Crayons Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

"Winnie the Pooh and Primary Crayons," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

Just thought I'd post today's painting before the weekend! Another trompe l'oeil painting using a piece of my old House at Pooh Corner books. I'll post for sale soon. Thanks for looking!

EBay Auction Starting - Hershey's Chocolate Bar Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

"In Case of Chocolate Emergency 5," acrylic on panel, 10" x 8".

SOLD

I revisited the shadow on this piece since posting it to my blog last week to make it softer and more natural. It's a tricky thing because I have to paint under a really bright light, which creates harsh shadows, so I've learned that always have to come back and knock them back a bit to make them really look convincing. Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Hello Kitty Crayons and Coloring in Pink Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

"Hello Kitty in Pink with Crayons," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

I wasn't quite able to finish this painting last night, so I had to continue it today and thought I'd share a quick photo. I remember getting a big stuffed Hello Kitty when I was young, and it always brings a smile to my face when I see it so popular today. My niece is a big Hello Kitty fan, so I guess I was thinking of her mostly when I painted this.

I'll post for sale soon. Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Hershey Chocolate Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

"In Case of Chocolate Emergency 5," acrylic on panel, 10" x 8".

Just thought I'd post the trompe l'oeil painting I finished today! I suppose I'm giving away a bit of a technical secret in this photograph - painting realistically in acrylic is a whole lot easier using Golden Liquid Acrylics, with loads of acrylic glaze; heavy body acrylics just won't work for the most part.

I'll be posting this piece for sale soon. Thanks for looking! Happy Weekend!

Side by Side on the Easel - Monopoly Boardwalk Card Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

Left: Original card taped to a board.
Right: "I Own Boardwalk," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

I thought I'd post another side by side comparison of one of my daily trompe l'oeil paintings and the original subject. I really enjoyed this one, a lot more than I thought I would with all of the tiny tiny letters. But I'm really enjoying working in acrylic now, as I think it's very conducive to my technique of glazing layers of paint on and letting them dry in between, which can take weeks in oil.

I'll be posting this piece to eBay soon. Enjoy!

On the Easel - Family Game Night Daily Painting

"Family Game Night," acrylic on panel, 8" x 8".

Finished this piece up tonight! I'll be putting it up on eBay soon. I stacked up several of our older board games and thought the arrangement was pretty interesting, bright and colorful, and just plain fun. The boxes aren't in perfect condition; they're pretty old, much more character than the reproductions put out today. I painted as much of the worn areas as I could, and I think it gave things a bit more dimension. Hope it brings back some pleasant memories of your family game nights! Thanks for looking!

Up for Auction on eBay - Fifty Dollar Bill Trompe L'Oeil Style Daily Painting

"Fifty Dollar Bill," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

SOLD

I don’t generally keep a lot of $50 bills in my wallet, so I thought I’d paint this one before I spend it! It’s also the first trompe l’oeil money painting I’ve done in acrylic, so that was a new experience for me. Fortunately, it worked out pretty well, because a $50 bill has a little gold/bronze area for one of its numbers – and I didn’t realize this until the end. And although I don’t have gold paint in my oil colors, I did have an appropriate iridescent bronze in acrylic, which fit pretty perfectly. Thanks for looking!

Up for Auction on eBay - Hot Fudge Sundae Daily Oil Painting

"Hot Fudge Sundae with Nuts and a Cherry," oil on panel, 6" x 6", by Kim Testone.

Auction ends Sunday January 18 at 9 p.m. Click here to bid.

I really like how this piece came together. I think there's a nice contrast between the dark fudge and the vanilla ice cream, and the little pops of color with the nuts. I find using a really limited color palette helps me for most paintings nowadays; this one uses just six colors, if memory serves me correctly - Payne's gray, titanium white, burnt umber, burnt sienna, cadmium red, and cadmium yellow deep. I'm especially pleased with the ice cream, which has a lot more color variation than one may think goes into it, and really helps it have more dimension. Thanks for looking!

eBay Auction Ends Today at 9 PM EST: Monopoly Board Game Daily Painting Study

Acrylic on panel, 8"x8"

I did this painting study from a photograph I took of my own Monopoly game. I'm calling it a "study" because I'm thinking I may tackle it in oil on a much larger scale in the future.

Auction ends today at 9 PM EST

In Progress - Unwrapping Hopper Trompe L'Oeil Subject and Painting Comparison

"Unwrapping Hopper," oil on panel (in progress), 8" x 8".

I thought it might be interesting to show an in-progress, side-by-side comparison (subject and painting) trompe l'oeil oil piece I was working on today. This is the most complicated of trompe l'oeil pieces I've done to date because of the complexity of the crinkled shapes in the brown wrapping paper. I find that I don't approach each painting the same way. Sometimes I do a more detailed drawing, sometimes I do an underpainting in brown and white and let it dry before adding color. For this one, because there are so many shapes to paint, I really just added a handful of marks for reference because a detailed line drawing would have been crazy confusing. Instead, I just look carefully and work in progression from section to section in order to make sure all of the shapes and colors are matching up correctly. Enjoy!

Up for Auction: "Get Out of Jail Free" Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

The title of this piece is "Get Out of Jail Free" and the medium is Acrylic on Panel. The size is 5"x5".
Auction Ends Wednesday January 14th at 9PM EST.  Click Here to Bid.

This piece is created in the Trompe L'Oeil style. I tape an object (in this case, the Monopoly card) to a board, then try to replicate it exactly to scale and as precisely as I can in paint on another board. So the card and tape are entirely made of paint. Thanks for looking!

Eeyore and Crayons Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

The title of this piece is "An Eeyore Kind of Day," and the medium is Acrylic on Panel. The size is 5"x5".  Sold
This is an original painting created in a trompe l'oeil style, meaning the entire piece created with paint, exactly to scale from the original subject. My process: I create a collage on a separate surface consisting of torn paper, crayons, etc. and then set it next to my blank surface on my easel and try to replicate it as closely as I can. For this piece, I used "The House at Pooh Corner" by A.A. Milne as a starting point. I inherited the books from my aunt (and I used a photocopy for my torn, colored reference - I wouldn't tear a book!). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for looking!
