Up on eBay - Chocolate Covered Ice Cream Daily Painting a Day

"Chocolate Covered Ice Cream," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

SOLD

Since I've been painting primarily in acrylic recently, for various reasons, I wanted to try to paint some "organic" pieces (i.e. food, etc.) in order to practice the smoother, softer transitions of an oil painter. This ice cream proved to be a great challenge, but I think it turned out well, and my husband was super-happy to have a supply of Byrne Dairy ice cream in the freezer for future pieces. Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Step by Step of Alice in Wonderland and Crayons - Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting Art

"Do you play croquet?," acrylic on panel, 5" x 5".

I've always loved the Alice in Wonderland stories. The books are on my shelves, I must have watched that 1980's made-for-TV movie a hundred times, and I just adore the amazing Alice in Wonderland digital collages created by the artist Maggie Taylor. Nothing, however, beats the original illustrations by John Tenniel (1820-1914), in collaboration with the Danziel brothers who did the final engravings. So for my painting today I created a collage using one of my favorite Alice illustrations, printed it on some aged paper, and of course added crayons and colored in a bit. I think it came together as a nice cross between contemporary colors and objects and tradition. I used my paint to mimic the cross-hatching of the original illustration, and decided to use a dark bronze-brown background to hold the piece together.

Here's some progression photos I snapped with my phone as I worked. Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Side by Side Comparison - Monopoly Community Card Income Tax Refund Daily Trompe L'Oeil Painting

Here's my painting for today, which I thought was appropriate being in tax season. Subject at left, painting at right. I actually did a sort of faux finish to get the background of the painting to look almost like masonite, so I was pretty pleased with that.

Hopefully we'll all get refunds this year! Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Step by Step Photos of Snickers Chocolate Candy Bar Trompe L'Oeil Daily Painting

Here's a few progression photos of my trompe l'oeil painting for today, a Snickers bar in acrylic, in my ongoing series "In Case of Chocolate Emergency." Start to finish, this piece took about 11 hours, all of which I did today except for the initial drawing and background color.

Thanks for looking! I'll post for sale soon.

The subject (left), and my initial layers of paint at right.

Up through this image, I've only used three colors - burnt sienna, payne's gray and white.
I may revisit the tape when I'm a little more awake. Note that the shadow here is a good bit softer than the subject; that's because the light I paint under creates very harsh shadows, and I've found them to be unconvincing when replicated in paint. So I always knock my shadows back and "eyeball it" until it looks convincing to me sitting in front of the piece.

***As promised, I revisited the tape and the shadow a bit, as shown below.

On the Easel - Step by Step of Life Board Game Painting Study

Sometimes my daily paintings turn into two- or three-day paintings. I don't actually think that's a terrible thing; I try to challenge myself in some way with each piece I do and I don't want to skip doing a piece that I think will overall improve my work. So are a few phone photos of the painting I finished up today - "This is Life," acrylic on cradled panel, 8" x 10". It's larger and more involved than most of my recent works, and I thought it would be fun to share a few progression photos. (Apologies for the poor quality of the photos! The finished piece is much more colorful, and I'll post a high-quality photo soon.)

But I am calling this a study because I do think I'd like to work on a larger, more involved version of this piece in the not-too-distant future. Thanks for looking!
