I am honored that my painting "Matchbox Cars with Beetle" has been included in the juried Online International Fall Show for the National Oil and Acrylic Painter's Society. This painting was selected to be one of 150 out of more than 700 total entries. What a nice little Christmas present for me!

Step by Step Photorealist Acrylic Painting - Matchbox Cars Pile - Organized Chaos Art

"The Beetle in My Matchbox Cars," acrylic on panel, 8" x 8".
I thought I'd share some step-by-step images of this piece, which took me just under two days to paint. I used my husband's old matchbox cars as the model for the piece. I'll post for sale soon. Enjoy!
1. Guidelines include and blocking in begin. The dark areas of the piece will help to unify the painting and give it depth, and help to guide me as I figure out the complexities of the shapes and colors.
 2. Continuing the blocking in of the dark areas. I am using a mixture of Payne's Gray, Raw Umber and Titanium White.
3. Dark areas blocked in. Some of these darker spots will be revisited or even toned with a glaze of color at the end.
4. I've lightly added color to each of the cars to give me some guidance on building up the colors and details of each one. It doesn't matter if they are exactly the right color at this point. There will be lots of paint layers added to each.
 5. Building up the colors and details.
6. Mostly complete.

Step by Step on the Easel - Daily Painting of Autumn Leaves - Organized Chaos Art

"Autumn Leaves," acrylic on panel, 6" x 6".

EBay auction begins at 9 p.m. EST. Click here to bid.

This is my first fall up living up north in almost 20 years, and last weekend I had to rake leaves for the first time as a grown-up. And although it was laborious, I did enjoy myself, and so at the end, I went through my piles and picked out a handful of colorful leaves to paint. They weren't perfect, but I still thought they were beautiful.

I've been calling these paintings of piles of objects my "organized chaos" pieces, which I find to be a lot like painting a puzzle, making sure everything is painted in careful relationship to the adjacent parts of the painting. I took a few photos of the painting as I completed it that I thought might be interesting to share. They are posted below. Thanks for looking!
1. I start with blocking in the basic shapes and some colors. I have basic outlines of the shapes of the leaves, and I applied a grid which I erased back, so it's very faint and won't show through even thin areas of paint later on.
2. As I keep working, my general goals are to keep refining the color, shapes and dimensions of the leaves within the painting. Some artists work methodically from grid block to grid block. I find that I have to keep bouncing around, looking at the painting as a whole, which helps me keep a more harmonious color scheme and painting style.
3. Continuing to build the textures and dimensions of the leaves. It's easy to start becoming complacent at this point and leave everything a bit washy, but continuing to add layers is what eventually makes things pop.
4. Close to finished.
5. Done, and photographed with my Nikon, not my camera phone! Thanks for looking!

Daily Acrylic Painting - Letter to Santa with Crayons - Trompe L'Oeil Art on eBay

"Memories of Letters to Santa," acrylic on panel, 8" x 8".

I wanted to create a couple of holiday-themed pieces, since I'm one of those people who really gets into the season. For this piece, I decided to paint a trompe l'oeil-style piece of an envelope addressed to Santa Claus. But I wanted to "age" it, to make it more like a memory, and give it the handwriting of a child. So for the subject, I dyed an envelope and crayons with instant coffee grounds, then used my left hand (I'm right-handed) to address the letter.

As with all of my trompe l'oeil-style pieces, my goal is to make this painting look deceptively real and three-dimensional. And, like most of my paintings, I just hope it makes you smile.

Available on eBay. Click here to bid. Thanks for looking!

On the Easel - Seven Dwarfs Group Selfie - Organized Chaos Daily Acrylic Painting

Just finished: "Seven Dwarfs Group Selfie!" Acrylic on panel, 8" x 10".

This is another piece using my new aquabord panels, which allow me to use a technique that lends itself to much richer, deeper colors and an almost perfectly smooth finish to the paint (no bumps). For my subject, I used a grouping of plastic toys of the Seven Dwarfs that my parents got me when they took me to Disney World when I was three. Although I wasn't sure how it would turn out, I'm really pleased. I think it's a lot of fun and makes me smile to really think of them all posed for this "Group Selfie."

Here are a couple of progress photos the piece, too. As you can see, it was complex, so like my other chaos paintings, I used a grid to help guide me.

Thanks for looking! I'll post for sale soon. I hope it makes you smile!

I put in several hours between the above photo and the one below, not just finishing Happy's face, but also continuing to layer and enrich the colors and details on the other dwarfs.

On the Easel - Mad Hatter's Wonderland Tea Party with Crayons - Daily Acrylic Trompe L'Oeil Painting

"Wonderland Tea Party," acrylic on panel, 8" x 8".

I thought I'd share another side by side comparison of my painting and my still life subject. This is the most complex of the Wonderland pieces I've done, and the largest. It was also my first attempt working on Aquabord, using an acrylic watercolor-style technique, and I'm really pleased with how the surface and the acrylic behaved in just the way I prefer, and enabled much richer, deeper and brighter colors. I'll post for sale soon. Thanks for looking!

Up on Etsy - Powdered Sugar Donut Shrine 2 - Daily Acrylic Painting

"Powdered Sugar Donut Shrine 2," acrylic on panel, 6" x 6"/$109

Available on Etsy.

I bought a bag of those little powdered sugar donuts a couple months ago for a painting subject, Donut Shrine 1, but I enjoyed it so much I thought I'd do another pile with a slightly different composition. They've got so many preservatives in them I could probably use them as subjects for quite a while longer! So while I don't plan to eat them, they are lovely to look at and to paint!

Daily Painting - Chocolate Caramel Peanuts Snickers Candy Bar Pile - Organized Chaos Painting

"Chocolate, Caramel and Peanuts," acrylic on panel, 6" x 6". SOLD

I've realized that I really enjoy painting these "piles" of objects, so this piece was fun to paint. I also took a few steps forward in my work, so this is actually one of the first pieces I've done featuring objects larger than life size, and I replaced the titanium white with zinc white in my color mixes, resulting in brighter, bolder colors.

Up on Etsy - Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse Scrabble Spells Smile - Daily Acrylic Painting

"Smile," acrylic on panel, 8" x 8"/$99

Available on Etsy.

This painting was completed in the "Trompe L'Oeil" style, meaning my goal is to fool the eye into believing there is a torn illustration and several Scrabble tiles attached to the board. I wanted to try a few paintings that used stills from some of the lovely old black and white animations I loved as a child, then crinkle them up, like an old photograph. Adding a simple message to this nostalgic imagery, like "smile," helps me remember to view life a little more simply.

I have been a comic book fan for most of my life, having read my share of comic books and enjoying the Justice League, Batman and Superman cartoons growing up. I've wanted to tackle a comic book trompe l'oeil piece for a while now, so this week, as I work on paper wrinkles and "Lettering" with my paint brush, I thought it would be as good a time as any. This is, of course, one of the rather campy classic comics but there's a lot to love. Thanks for looking!

Up on Etsy - Grandma's Pound Cake Recipe - Trompe L'Oeil Daily Acrylic Painting

"Grandma's Pound Cake Recipe," acrylic on panel, 10" x 8"/SOLD

As I continue practicing my paper wrinkles and lettering for my trompe l'oeil style works, I thought I might do some paintings that feature handwriting - like this recipe, in my own terrible scribble. I found this paper in my recipe cabinet the other day. I loved the yellow paper, and I remember the recipe was good, although I haven't made it in years. I think the most successful part of the painting is that little folded over tear right in the center of the top of the paper. Thanks for looking!
